How about some homemade, keto-friendly mozzarella sticks to satisfy that craving?

Crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, these mozzarella sticks need few ingredients and are very easy to make.

As the recipe substitutes the white flour with almond flour, it also means that these mozzarella sticks are packed with protein, fiber, and calcium so you actually get nutrients while eating them!

These keto mozzarella sticks are very easy to throw together, using few ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen.

Before you start on the recipe, it is useful to have three bowls and a tray that can fit the freezer. Mix the almond flour with garlic powder, onion powder, and salt and set aside; to another bowl lightly beat up the egg; finally, add the pork rind panko crumbs mixed with Italian seasoning and parmesan cheese to the third bowl.

Dredge the cheese strings in almond flour first to help the egg stick better; dip it in the egg then roll in the pork rind panko crumbs to coat. We recommend you use one hand for dry dredging and coating another hand for the wet egg dip.

Once all mozzarella sticks are coated in panko crumb, it is important to freeze for at least 2h. In this way, the cheese won’t fall apart in the hot oil in the cooking process.

This recipe is meal prep friendly and it can be doubled or tripled and stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Once the mozzarella sticks are frozen solid, you can deep fry them or bake them in the oven. If baked in the oven, please spray cooking on top to make sure the result is crispy.

This recipe is forgiving and can be easily adapted to any diet. The pork rind panko crumb can be substituted with almond flour for vegetarian mozzarella sticks. Alternatively, only pork rind panko crumb can be used in case of nut allergies.

Prepare three containers;

To one container add the almond flour with garlic powder, onion powder, and salt and mix well;

To another container add the egg and lightly beat it;

To the third bowl, add the pork rind panko crumbs, Italian seasoning, and parmesan cheese;

Slice the string cheese in half;

To prepare the mozzarella sticks, roll the cheese in the almond flour mix, then the egg, and finally in the pork rind panko crumbs; repeat until all the cheese strings are coated;

Place the breaded cheese sticks onto a tray and freeze for at least 2h.

When ready to cook, add 2-3 frozen mozzarella sticks in a small pan with enough hot oil in it to deep fry the cheese; cook for 4-5 minutes or until golden brown; alternatively, they can be baked or air fried at 400 F for 5-7 minutes;

Remove on a wire rack and allow to drain excess fat.

  • 6 string cheese cut in half
  • 1/2 cup almond flour
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
